God's Glory Our Joy

Building Biblical Churches for the 21st Century

Conferences and God’s Glory?

Of the holding of conferences there is no end. Much attendance is wearisome to the flesh. Would Solomon say this today?

There are so many Christian conferences to choose from with the same general theme: Where is the blessing we once knew? The slowest saint can grasp the obvious gist… Things were better, preaching had more impact, the gospel was more greatly honored, the Spirit moved in greater genuine power… back then. Speakers point us to days of Puritans and Reformers; days of awakening and revival. Better days.

Such conferences can backfire in two ways. They leave us feeling bereft of God in this ‘day of small things’, and we become deflated and inactive, waiting for a sovereign act of God alone.

Other conferences give the impression, “We are on the crest of a wave – get it here!” These leave us buoyed up, then disillusioned when the ABC method of fab churchiosity fails to satisfy.

How refreshing it has been for the last three years to attend the God’s Glory Our Joy Conference! This year it was held in Warrington. I loved their emphasis. The speakers did address days that were undoubtedly better, but then practically unpacked principles into today’s church setting, calling for reformation. I felt the deep need of contemporary British churches. I felt the urgency of calling upon God to act. But I also felt, “Right, much to be working on while hoping in God!” What more do you want from a conference (and a free one at that).

John Hall, a retired GP and church planter, brought much scriptural wisdom as to how biblical families should be promoted in our churches. Oliver Allmand-Smith vividly contrasted the Puritan family and today’s Christian home. He demonstrated how they made Scripture central to family life and prospered. The pointed challenge was that we should and can do the same. Creeds and Confessions - dry as dust, right? Wrong! Stephen Rees brought out their intense richness and sweetness in an overview of historic doctrinal statements and their present day usefulness. This warm and encouraging talk got me reaching for my 1689 immediately. Walter Johnson spoke from personal testimony on the doctrines of grace and their importance. Tim Mills shed fascinating light on corporate worship and how to enter God’s gates with thanksgiving. John Hall rounded off a full day on purposefully living a Christ-centred life. God’s Glory Our Joy again delivers on its slogan, Building Biblical Churches for the 21st Century. It is a rewarding time of fellowship, warmly commended to all.
